Akıncı: “EU can contribute to the resolution process, however the ongoing negation process is the UN process”
President Mustafa Akıncı stated that the EU can contribute to the resolution process, however the ongoing negation process is the UN process. Akıncı also stated that the European Commission President’s Special Representative in the Cyprus settlement negotiations Pieter Van Nuffel will be in a position to help on technical issues as long as both sides request.
President Mustafa Akıncı, pointed out at a reception that the negotiations have been going on for 47 years on the island and stated that when he said that a settlement can be reached in months, everyone was surprised, however, there is nothing that has not been negotiated in these 47 years.
Akıncı stated that the solution will carry the federal Cyprus to the European Union and Turkish will be the formal language of EU and emphasized the importance of this for the Turkish speaking countries.
Underlining that EU can contribute to the solution process but this is a process of United Nations, Akıncı reminded that Pieter Van Nuffel, EU President’s Special Representative to Cyprus, is not a part of the process like UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor Espen Barth Eide and added that Nuffel is in a position that when the sides ask for a help on technical issues, he can help.
Akıncı stated that EU should help the Turkish Cypriots during the harmonization process as it does to the other EU countries.
