Akıncı: “It is regrettable that the Greek Cypriot side is not taking any step”

President Mustafa Akıncı said it is regrettable that although the Turkish side has taken unilateral steps on the issue of the confidence-building measures, the Greek Cypriot side has not taken any steps on the issue of mobile phones.

In his speech during one of his receptions, President Akıncı stated that there is no technical problem left in each side’s using their mobile lines in the other side. However, he added that the laws in the South Cyprus prevent cooperation with the operators in the TRNC.

Akıncı underlined the importance of the confidence-building measures which will help to the resolution process in parallel with the work of finding a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem. Akıncı stated that there are some positive steps that have been taken such as removal of the visa forms at the crossing points, solution of the problem faced in the radio frequencies, interconnection of the electricity grids and opening of Derinya and Aplıç gates. Akıncı concluded by saying that the only problem is experienced in the cooperation on mobile phones.
