Akıncı: “There are no risk factor in 25 of 28 minefields”
President Mustafa Akıncı has announced that there are no any risk factor in 25 of the 28 minefields pointing out that that there were three suspected areas, and the risky areas in Ömerli and Alemdağ have been fenced off and posed no direct risk to the public.
Akıncı added that when he has started his duty on the 30th of April and the negotiations started officially on the 15th of May, 28 minefields were presented by Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiadis at their first meeting on 15th of May. Akıncı also said that inspections have been held by teams from the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in company with the Cyprus Turkish Security Forces within the areas of which coordinates were provided by the Greek Cypriot Side.
Furthermore, Akıncı reminded that the UNMAS teams had carried out the inspections in line with a request he had made to the UNSG Ban Ki Moon.
