Akıncı: “We are at a turning point of the negotiation process”
President Mustafa Akıncı said that they have reached a turning point in the negotiation process since the year 1968 in Cyprus and added that the negotiations cannot continue forever.
The 32nd anniversary of the establishment of the TRNC was celebrated with ceremonies in all cities, primarily in Lefkoşa.
In his speech at the ceremony held in Lefkoşa Dr. Fazıl Küçük Avenue, President Akıncı said that the solution has become more difficult compared to 10 years ago and it will be much more difficult after 10 years. The President also added that their conduct is well intentioned and decided for a federal solution and they give great importance to political equality, security and bi-zonality.
Criticizing the Greek Cypriot side’s comment for a federal solution that “It is not an ideal solution, it is a painful reconciliation”, Akıncı said that this is extremely disturbing and it gives negative message from the Greek Cypriot side.
Furthermore, Akıncı pointed out that Cyprus is a region full of problems and the Cyprus problem has been tried to be solved for many years. Related to the process in Cyprus Akıncı said that :“Since the year 1963 when the Turkish Cypriots were excluded from the Cyprus Republic established in 1960, the Turkish Cypriots’ undeniable right has emerged to establish their own state. Within the framework of this right, we were organized under the Temporary Cyprus Turkish Administration, Autonomous Cyprus Turkish Administration and Turkish Federated State of Cyprus. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was established on 15 November 1983 with the declaration of the independence approved by the TRNC Assembly. It was stated in the declaration of independence that proclamation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus cannot prevent negotiations and the establishment of a federation by the two sides.”
