DİMED hosts panel discussion tackling discrimination against women

A panel discussion entitled “Women’s Rights: Discrimination in the Family and Workplace, was held by the TRNC Foreign Affairs Ministry Professionals and Spouses Association (DİMED) in December.

Panel members included Speaker of the Assembly, Dr.Sibel Siber; Supreme Court President, Narin Ferdi Şefik; Vice Rector of Başkent University, Prof. Dr. Nermin Özgülbaş; and BÜKÇAM President, Prof. Dr. Ayşe Akın. The discussion, which was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Münevver Çağın Bektaş, was held at Lefkoşa Merit Hotel on 17 December 2016.

Chairman of DİMED, Assistant Professor Dr. Oya Ertuğruloğlu, made the opening speech, pointing out that the association has organized various activities such as charity sales, and contributed to numerous charity organizations. Ertuğruloğlu said it was the first time the association has organised a panel on the issues facing women.

Ertuğruloğlu emphasized that although the world’s population is predominantly female, women’s social rights are always left behind.

Following the opening speech, Speaker of the Assembly, Sibel Siber made the first presentation, entitled “Women’s Empowerment”. The panel continued with presentations on “The Status of Women in the Family” by Prof. Dr. Ayşe Akın; and “Leverage in Strengthening the Status of Woman: Woman Entrepreneurship” by Prof. Dr. Nermin Özgülbaş. The final presentation entitled “Women’s Rights in the TRNC Law”, was made by Supreme Court President, Narin Ferdi Şefik.
