Foreign Minister Özdil Nami has announced that the Navtex represents the Turkish Cypriots, not Turkey, and that the hydrocarbon exploration activities are being conducted in the name of the Turkish Cypriots rather than Turkey. Minister Nami, who made a statement to Havadis newspaper, expressed “it is not true that Turkey is governing the natural resources of Cyprus; the Greek Cypriots are cooperating with private companies and we are cooperating with Turkey.”

Foreign Minister Nami, who described the Greek Cypriot statement made on 5 January that “it is not possible for us to return to the negotiating table as long as there is a Navtex” as insincere, added that the Turkish Cypriot side waited for a statement by the Greek Cypriot side in the period between 30 December to 5 January when the Navtex was not in force, but that this did not occur. Nami added that the visits that Espen Barth Eide, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, will commence on the Island today, as well as the visit of Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Foreign Minister of Turkey, are significant in terms of the negotiations.
