Foreign Minister Özdil Nami expressed that suspension of the negotiations constitutes a shocking development and has led all involved to become concerned. Foreign Minister Nami also mentioned that the significance of finding a settlement to the Cyprus issue has become more apparent, particularly in light of the threats created by the instability in the overall region.

Speaking before the General Assembly of the Parliament, Foreign Minister Nami stated that it is an unacceptable approach for the Greek Cypriot leadership to conduct hydrocarbon exploration activities prior to reaching a settlement on the Island. Foreign Minister Nami added that the Greek Cypriot leadership’s recent commencement of exploration activities in a new parcel is being carried out in disrespect of the mutual rights and interests necessary to reach a comprehensive settlement.

Foreign Minister Özdil Nami underlined that such approaches will not contribute positively to reaching a comprehensive settlement and that the steps being taken are not conducive to peace building activities. Stating that the Greek Cypriot side’s excuse for abandoning the negotiating table is unacceptable, Foreign Minister Nami expressed that the focus should be on finding the path to a comprehensive settlement rather than allowing anger towards Turkey or an issue related to natural resources to be reflected on the negotiating table.

Foreign Minister Nami called on the international community to re-evaluate their position in this regard.
