The newly-appointed Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa Derya Kanbay during the visit to 3rd President Derviş Eroğlu stated that the negotiations should be carried out with a smart calendar, without emitting to a lot of time. In case of hurry some things may be missed and problems that cannot be solved may be arisen.
Kanbay pointed out that there are two separate lands, two separate nations and two separate governments on the island and said: “They can live side by side with a federal structure and some issues can speak in one voice in the international arena. In this way, this is probably going to be a success, there may be a federal building”.
Kanbay said that the basic methods of the negotiations prevent sharing information. Kanbay also noted that explaining everything without reaching a consensus could be confusing.
Pointing out that people may have some hesitation as some news about the negotiations comes out, Kanbay said that especially some personal issues and issues that will affect their lives can bother the people.
Derviş Eroğlu, the former President, pointing out that the expectations suddenly soared, said: “Hopefully, we will not be disappointed later”. He also stated that the negotiations are not only based on the attitude and the goodwill of the Turkish Cypriots, but of the Greek Cypriots as well.
Stating that the former leaders had reached compromises on several issues before, however, these issues are now being negotiated again, Eroğlu commented that if they start from scratch whenever a new leader is elected, a settlement will never be reached. Eroğlu expressed his wish that the leaders reach an agreement on the present six topics, even though it is difficult.
Eroğlu stated that a settlement method based on a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation had become a UN parameter. He also pointed out that the federal state will be established by the two states, which have equal status.
