Regarding the European Union High Representative’s Statements on the Presence of the TRNC in the Organization of Turkic States

Remarks of the Vice President of the European Commission and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Mr Josep Borrell on November 7, 2024, regarding the representation of our country at the 11th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on November 6, 2024, characterising this representation to be a further step by the OTS to legitimize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and expressing European Union’s (EU) unease in this regards is regarded as the manifestation of the discomfort with the growing acceptance towards our new vision.

Such baseless rhetoric does not and cannot negate the reality that Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is one of the two states on the island, which was established by the Turkish Cypriot people on the basis of its right to self-determination and its inherent rights to sovereign equality and equal international status.

These unfortunate statements, is yet another indication of EU’s inability to remain impartial on the Cyprus issue. We call on the EU to abandon this biased and erroneous stance and cease paying lip service to the Greek Cypriot side.

The EU must immediately cease its policy of exacting a toll, exerting pressure and restricting the rights of the Turkish Cypriot side and its people in every sphere, simply because they favour a two-state solution.

It is a great impudence for the EU to try to put pressure on OTS members by giving reference to the UN Charter; while EU itself has made the Cyprus issue inextricable by unilaterally accepting the Greek Cypriot side as a member before an aggreement was reached, which is in contradiction with its own values and principles.

We reiterate our call upon the EU to recognize that the Turkish Cypriot people have an equal say in the future of the island and stop actions that serve no other purpose than further emboldening the Greek Cypriot side.

Such actions only reinforce, regardless of the intended outcomes, the legitimacy of our struggle and strengthen our determination to defend our rightful cause on every platform.
