Statement regarding the conclusions of the EU Leaders Summit held on 24-25 June 2021
The conclusions of the European Union (EU) Leaders Summit that took place in Brussels on 24-25 June 2021 contain decisions that concern our country. The EU, with these decisions, has once again disregarded the legitimate rights and interests of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
The fact that the name of the Turkish Cypriot People is not even mentioned in these decisions, that directly concern them, means that the EU is ignoring the existence of our People. We condemn the unfortunate and untruthful politics of the EU, which has not kept their promises towards the Turkish Cypriot People until today.
The EU, with its insistent stance towards a solution model based on federation that has been ongoing for more than half a century and ended in failure, is disregarding the will of the Turkish Cypriot People. The Turkish Cypriot side remains determined on reaching a solution based on sovereign equality and equal international status of the two States as it suggested at the 5+UN informal meeting in Geneva on 27-29 April 2021. The continuation of the hiding of the EU behind the UN Security Council Resolutions which are no longer valid, only prevents the two sides of the Island from reaching a realistic and lasting agreement based on cooperation.
The authority and the responsibility of closed area of Maraş, which has become the symbol of the status quo, rest with our State and its institutions. Our decisions regarding the closed area of Maraş are taken in line with the property rights claims and international law.
Although the Greek Cypriot side has disrupted all past federal settlement processes to failure, the EU continues to reward them on every occasion. We invite the EU to end their unjust and biased approach and follow an impartial policy. We, once again, emphasize the determination of the TRNC State, together with the Motherland Turkey, to continue to protect the legitimate rights and the interests of the Turkish Cypriot People.
