Regarding the United States' Decision to Extend the Lifting of the Arms Embargo on the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus

It has come to our attention that the United States (US) Department of State has approved the lifting of restrictions on the sale of defense articles and services to the Greek Cypriot administration of Southern Cyprus for the 2027 fiscal year, and that the arms embargo imposed on the Greek Cypriot administration has accordingly been suspended for a period of one more year, until 30 September 2027.

We wish to share with the public our deep regret over this decision taken by the US Administration.

We believe that steps which disregard the realities on the island and in the region, ignore the Turkish Cypriot People and risk triggering a tendency towards further armament should be avoided.

At this critical juncture when our region and the Middle East in particular is witnessing serious conflicts and sensitive developments, it is of great importance that steps be taken which take into account the delicate balance in the Eastern Mediterranean and contribute to an environment of peace and stability in the region.

We invite all relevant international actors to contribute to peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and to pursue a fair and balanced policy that takes into account the fact that there are two separate States and two separate Peoples on the island.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will, as always, continue to take all necessary steps with determination, in unwavering cooperation and solidarity with Motherland Türkiye, in order to safeguard the security and interests of the Turkish Cypriot People.
