We welcome the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye following the meetings held by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we would like to emphasize once again that bringing up the models for an agreement on the Cyprus issue which have been exhausted for many years and whose failure has been proven time and again, is incompatible with the current realities. The existence of two distinct Peoples, two distinct democracies and two independent and sovereign State structures on the island, is an undisputable fact. It is impossible for any process carried out to succeed whilst disregarding this fact.

We reiterate that a fair, lasting, and sustainable agreement on the Cyprus issue can only be reached on the basis of affirming the inherent rights of the Turkish Cypriot People and acknowledging their sovereign equality and equal international status.  We once again emphasize that we will not accept any model or negotiation process other than one based on these two fundamental principles, and we underline that a realistic outlook for the future in Cyprus can only be achieved through an approach that is based on the existing political and factual realities on the island, respects the will of the parties, and fosters a new culture of cooperation.
