The paragraphs on Cyprus issue in the 2025 Türkiye Report adopted yesterday (17 June 2026) by the General Assembly of the European Parliament (EP) once again reflect the biased approach of the European Parliament which is entirely detached from reality. We categorically reject all the unfounded accusations made against Motherland Türkiye and the allegations by the EP that disregard the inherent rights and the sovereign will of the Turkish Cypriot people, and existing realities on the island.

The description of the Turkish Cypriot people in the report merely as “a legitimate community of the island” and the call on Türkiye to “open political space” for Turkish Cypriots blatantly ignores the right of our people to determine their own future and the democratic will through which the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was established. The TRNC is a sovereign and independent state, sustained by its institutions, democratic structure and the free will of its people.

The European Parliament’s insistence on imposing the federation model as the sole option is incompatible with the political and factual realities on the island. A negotiation model exhausted due to the intransigent stance of the Greek Cypriot side cannot contribute to an agreement between the two sides. A lasting and a fair agreement is only possible through the acknowledgement of the Turkish Cypriot people’s sovereign equality and equal international status.

We would also like to point out that the biased and unfounded allegations in the report regarding Akyar, Pile, and Varosha, as well as issues of property, missing persons, cultural heritage, buffer zone violations and Türkiye’s legitimate presence in Cyprus, are null and void.

The call contained in the report on the European Commission for the appointment of a new Special Representative on Cyprus is unfounded and therefore inappropriate. It is not convincing for the European Union to assert that it can contribute to an agreement as a “neutral” actor, given its long-standing record of disregarding the fundamental rights of the Turkish Cypriot people. Any form of intervention by the European Union shall not be deemed acceptable.

The failure of the EU to fulfill its commitments made in the year 2004 to lift the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot people while rewarding the intransigent stance of the Greek Cypriot side, and even attempting to obstruct the TRNC’s growing international relations with the Organization of Turkic States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, once again demonstrates the Union’s partial stance on Cyprus issue.

We call on the EU institutions to abandon unilateral political approaches favoring the Greek Cypriot Administration and instead adopt a constructive and balanced approach based on the realities of the island, respecting the inherent rights, sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, in full harmony and solidarity with Motherland Türkiye, will continue to safeguard the sovereignty, security, and welfare of its people, and will resolutely pursue its rightful struggle for the international recognition of its sovereign equality and equal international status.
