Intergovernmental water supply and management project was signed between Turkey and the TRNC in Ankara.

The deal was signed by TRNC Prime Minister Ömer Kalyoncu and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu.

The aim of the agreement is regarded as “ensuring the use of the supplied water effectively and efficiently and creating a legal framework to meet the TRNC’s drinking water, agricultural irrigation water and wastewater treatment needs of the TRNC on the basis of the principles of respecting the environment and the international standards.

Following signing of the agreement, Prime Minister Ömer Kalyoncu and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu held a joint press conference.

In his speech Prime Minister Ömer Kalyoncu expressed his wish and he said that the water will open a new era in bilateral relations and besides the economic relations the water will also contribute to peace, stability and the mutual benefit.

Stating that being in a period in which significant progress has been achieved in order to reach a fair and lasting peace in Cyprus, Kalyoncu said that the negotiations continue positively and the water project has also vital importance in terms of the Turkish side in the Federal United Cyprus to be established.

In his part, Davutoğlu added that in case of a solution of the Cyprus problem, importance of the water will increase.

Commenting on statements form the AKEL party that South Cyprus won’t be bound to keeping the agreement made between Turkey and the TRNC and such an agreement can only be signed by the Federal Republic of Cyprus, Davutoğlu said that the comment of the country which is not recognized by Turkey doesn’t concern himself.
